Dear fantards, what did you hope to accomplish....
......when you spam people's review pages by telling them that they are wrong just because they deviated from what your precious fanfic writer did? It was the same pairing, but tweaked. Not everyone's obliged to read your favorite author's work because not everyone thinks that their crap smells good. Are you seriously that pathetic that you attack another author for writing the same character/same pairing?! Worse yet is when you do attack people who write your darling couple in a less than flattering light because of your constant glorification of it. It even said on the bottom that it was an alternative view. Did you miss your lesson on Hooked on Phonics?
Jesus.
I saw this after I looked at a friend's review page. Sick, sick, world. I cringed as much as when I saw the the 2girls1cup video. What the heck is wrong with these people?

Okay, so... All right, we've had people complaining about just getting a "Good job" type review, am I right? Well, what about a random Emoticon face? Like, for instance, you write a story, and you get a random ^_^ or a :O that has nothing to do with the story? Like just recently, I got a review for a story I wrote that consisted of a O_O face. Yeah, it was a Transformers Smut story, but it wasn't a shocking pairing, or even an unheard one so I don't know if I should take that as an insult or a compliment. I've mostly enjoyed your story despite the spelling errors and occasional lapse in grammatical sense. Hey! I can overlook that, I know how exciting it can be when the plot bunnies take over. Usually second readings and a beta will catch my mistakes, but that's another rant. Today's rant is this:
The man's name is spelled Pepys. Not, as you seem to think, Peeps. It's very kinda well known. I know it sounds like Peeps, but it's not the same. Trust me. 'Peeps Diary' just makes me envision little marshmallow birds writing with Easter egg dye. That's not Pepys, that's an internet joke. You just made yourself look like a complete idiot - Congratulations!

Draco and Harry hate each other. That's part of the reason I like reading good fics about the pairing: it's interesting to see them fall unwittingly and sometimes unwillingly into a dysfunctional, controversial relationship. But such a relationship doesn't happen within the span of three (average length) chapters. So when I see fics wherein their hatred is established in the first chapter but they suddenly end up having hot sex in the second chapter, I kill the back button dead. And even if they did do something as out of character as randomly have sex (without the involvement of alcohol or weird spells), I highly doubt it will lead them to believe that they've misunderstood each other all along, confess their deepest angstiest secrets to each other, and live happily ever after.
And seriously, every time I read about Draco calling Harry by a cute little pet name, I die a little inside.
Also, Death Note fandom, where be all the good L/Misa fic?

This just in: Some Naruto fic writers are less than exceptional.
To the writer of a fic that is otherwise . . . well, my English teacher wouldn't fail you for it:
Chouji is one of the nicer, less Angry Rawr I'll Kick Your Intestines characters in Naruto. And, yes, he's had some self-esteem/body issues over the years. Kids can be cruel, and after a lifetime of getting teased over one thing, a person is liable to get a little sensitive about it.
But those two factors combined are no excuse to turn Chouji into a whimpering girly-girl "oh no don't look at me I'm hideous" crybaby.
Especially around a person who, at the point of the story where this began to seriously bug me, he has been in a relationship with for four solid years.
In fact? This goes out to all fandoms:

1. Stalking is not a valid courtship method. If character A shows no interest in character B, and character B proceeds to follow A around, take photos of them, learn their routine, break into their home and steal things...A probably isn't going to decide that B is the love of his/her life because B is "so devoted". A is probably going to get a restraining order, and maybe buy a weapon of some sort. Unless A has a *lot* of emotional issues.
2. B Killing, attempting to kill, physically harming, spreading lies about, or setting up situations to make A's boyfriend look bad is REALLY not cool. Again, we're back to fucking scary and stalker-ish territory.
3. Being shy is not an excuse to do any of these things.
Yes, even if B is really cute.
Oh, also, if B threatens to commit suicide if A doesn't pay attention? Again, NOT COOL.
All of this is abusive behaviour. Now, if you're writing a story that is about the fucked up nature of A/B, go for it. A good angsty messed up pairing is awesome, and some fandoms have characters that really beg for it. That is absolutely fine.
What is not okay is when you write a character acting like this, and hail him/her as a hero, a beautiful example of true love, and the kind of happy fluffy relationship everyone longs for. That is, quite frankly, worrying.
This is not actually directed at Stephanie Meyer or Twilight, though from what I hear it could be. A published author doing it doesn't mean it's a good idea! Look at Anne Rice. |

Two small rants
1. So, you have a favourite character. So do most other people (I've never heard of someone who didn't, but that doesn't mean they don't exist...anyone?).
However, there is a problem. You're glorifying your favourite character into something like a demi-god. They can do no wrong, they have no flaws, the other characters all worship them and wouldn't know how to wipe their arse without them. It's just a teeny, tiny bit annoying.
I) The other characters probably wouldn't act like that towards them. They might barely have met them, not talked much, generally brushed your favourite off because they had other things in mind, etc. This does not mean that they're evil incarnate, and it doesn't mean that you have to write about how they see the error of their ways and start sitting up and panting at the mere mention of your favourite character's name.
IIa) I've clicked back on stories that glorified someone I really like and someone I don't like equally. It doesn't make the reader want to finish your story.
IIb) Sadly enough, this seems to happen more often with canon writers, but I know that I, at least, have gone from meh to bleh, neutral to annoyed by a character, because of how their fans kept glorifying them.
In short: Just because you think the sun shines out your favourite character's ass, doesn't mean that others (in the story and out) agree.
2. Please keep in mind that as readers/viewers/listeners/whatever we're often privy to information the characters in the story don't have. It's jarring if someone starts to talk about things they should have no way of knowing about (that includes no interaction with someone who does know about it), and it's unfair to judge someone based on knowledge they have no way of having.

A YYH post about someone other than Sensui. (Or, "Oh my God, the world's going to end!" LOL) Dear YYH Fandom: After rewatching the Dark Tournament arc, I am most disappointed in your characterization of Younger Toguro in fanfiction. It's kind of sad that there's only ONE goodfic about Younger Toguro on the Pit. Really, the YYH antagonists need more love. Also, the past relationship between Toguro and Genkai was more screwed-up and complicated than most people write it. Plus Genkai wouldn't be all mushy about him, nor he about her. They're just not the type to be all lovey-dovey. |

Oh, God, help me. Is it really all so bad? Even on Livejournal there are Sue fics. I just want some decent Erik/Christine or Raoul/Christine...is that so much to ask for?
I'm also sick of not being able to read Sweeney Todd fic. Where is all the good stuff hiding? Because I've been told there is some, but that you really need to look.
I know this is a rant community but..help? I'm at the end of my tether with all the bad fic for my poor, beautiful, dark and twisted fandoms. |
